FORT KENT, Maine (WAGM) – The University of Maine Fort Kent indoor Track and Field team started training one month ago. With just two weeks to go until their first competition they’re getting more additions to the team.
“Some dual sports that do other fall sports join us in December so kind of always adding new faces to the team,” said Davis Cyr, 2nd Season Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field coach.
Coach Davis Cyr has a lot on his plate coaching the men and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams. He credits his team for their efforts.
“Luckily I have a really committed team that’s really talented as well so we kind of learn how to train harder and more competitively in a shorter amount of time, but they’ll be ready for December and they compete very well against the teams that we compete against,” said Cyr, “Especially as individuals because we are all a smaller team so points wise, we might not win a meet but individual performances we usually take a few first places home with us.”
While the smaller team might not win as many competitions, they are still strong.
“Support. Our main component is support and knowing that there is somebody there for you when you need it,” said junior at UMFK Georgia Burton.
Compared to the outdoor track, the indoor track is smaller with less events. But indoor track does have an advantage.
“The only difference there is the elements really and truly because outside there’s the wind inside there’s not,” said Burton, “So it’s all about that and also the implement. The indoor shot is soft, the outdoor one is hard.”
Almost all of the runners, like Andrew Pierce a senior at UMFK, compete in indoor and outdoor events, each with different preferences.
“I enjoy outdoor a lot more because there’s a lot more implements for us to throw and everything,” said Senior at UMFK Andrew Pierce, “We only throw two implements indoor compared to our four implements outdoor so even though we have more indoor meets, I’m still looking forward to the outdoor.”
Having indoor events before the larger scale outdoor events also has some advantages.
“Getting to have more team chemistry, learn more about the team, incoming freshmen and everything we learn a lot more about them. We’re all hungry we all come in here every single day trying to have the same goal and we’re going to work and work to where we need to be for the outdoor season and Nationals,” said Pierce.
UMFK’s first meet will be at the University of Southern Maine on December 14 where they will compete against seven other teams.
