PORTLAND (WGME) — Tax season is officially here, and the IRS is rolling out a new tool to make filing taxes easier, and free, for many Mainers.
The “Direct File” program offers eligible taxpayers a way to file their federal tax returns online without needing to pay for third-party software or services.
“Look, no one loves having to prepare their taxes, but at least you shouldn’t have to pay to get it done,” Economic Security Project Vice President Adam Ruben said.
The IRS tested the tool as a pilot program last year, helping 140,000 Americans file their returns, and has now expanded it to half the states, including Maine.
“Most people said they did it in less than an hour, and three-quarters preferred it to other methods of filing taxes,” Ruben said. “That’s what led the IRS to expand it to more states and make it permanent.”
Mainers using Direct File can complete their federal return online and then will be directed to the Maine Revenue Services website to file their state taxes for free.
Ruben says the program could help users claim tax credits they might otherwise miss.
“That’s real money in working- and middle-class families’ pockets,” Ruben said. “Our research at the Economic Security Project finds that when Direct File is fully built out within a few years, Maine taxpayers will save $80 million a year in tax prep costs, time saved and additional tax credits they’re going to claim. That’s money people are really going to appreciate when things are tight.”
The program isn’t for everyone just yet.
Direct File is designed for simple tax situations, such as employees with a W-2 form. Freelancers, gig workers, those with complex investments or individuals who work in multiple states will need to use other filing methods.
Eligible taxpayers can visit directfile.irs.gov to check if they qualify. The program also includes free live chat support for those who need assistance.
