YouTube TV is the largest live TV streaming service on the market. Even adding 1.9 million subscribers in 2023, it is still losing money. The research group MoffettNathanson expects YouTube TV to break even in 2024.
MoffettNathanson says YouTube TV is on track to add 1.5 million new subscribers per year. With this increase, they expect YouTube TV to become the largest provider of live TV in the United States according to a new report by NextTV. This would make YouTube TV larger than Comcast, Spectrum, DIRECTV, DISH, and others.
Cable TV and network executives had expected streaming services to help replace cable losses but that is not happening. YouTube TV, Hulu, Sling TV, and Fubo combined only added 1,894,000 subscribers in 2023. Most of that was for YouTube TV, which added 1.9 million subscribers. Hulu added 100,000 live TV customers, and Fubo added 173,000 subscribers in 2023. Sling TV lost 279,000 subscribers in the same year.
It is starting to look like cord cutting in 2024 will grow even faster. MoffettNathanson’s prediction that YouTube TV will become bigger than Comcast and Spectrum lines up with the continued drop in cable TV subscribers and the continued growth of YouTube TV. Exactly when that happens is unknown, but don’t be surprised if it happens in the next few years.
