Three Washington High School students won awards at the third annual NAACP ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) held at Robert Morris University on April 6.
Carter Spruill, president of the Coraopolis NAACP Chapter, presented award certificates to Alyvia Price for poetry, Car’Liyah Walden for a short story, and junior Tiana Ellis for a sculpture during a presentation at Wash High last week.
Ellis won a gold medal in the sculpture category and will compete in the national competition in Las Vegas in July, in conjunction with the NAACP National Convention. Walden earned a bronze medal.
The students also received a financial award.
ACT-SO is a high school initiative sponsored by the NAACP to promote and encourage academic and artistic excellence. It includes competitions in STEM, humanities, business, and performing, visual and culinary arts.
