ChatGPT-maker OpenAI recently introduced GPT-4o, its latest multimodal large language model. According to a report by AppFigures, ChatGPT’s mobile app saw the “biggest spike in revenue and also the most revenue in a single day ever” soon after the newest model’s launch. As per its App Intelligence data, ChatGPT’s mobile revenue increased by 22% on the day GPT-4o was announced.
How much OpenAI earned by launching GPT-4o
ChatGPT mobile app’s net revenue rose from a daily average of $491,000 to nearly $900,000. This was the most revenue that the app has seen in a single day since its launch, the report adds. OpenAI’s AI chatbot has seen steady revenue growth since it was rolled out in November 2022.
Apart from this, the AI startup earned a total of $4.2 million in net revenue from the App Store and Google Play (but mostly from the App Store) within a week.
Demand for the ChatGPT app has increased
Currently, OpenAI offers GPT-4o for free on its website with time limitations. However, mobile app users have to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus to get access to the new model.
The report suggests that OpenAI is offering web users the model for free as it might be making more money from its app than its website version.
ChatGPT Plus subscription on the mobile app also offers access to Voice input which might be limited to the app version of ChatGPT. On the desktop version, users can only communicate with the AI through text and misses out on some new tools.
App users can even access chat history offline. OpenAI has also promised faster response time and GPT-4o’s better integration for the mobile version.
OpenAI’s latest model comes with multiple improvements over GPT-4. This includes faster performance and multimodal capabilities across text, voice and vision. GPT-4o also supports the ability to upload screenshots and documents for insight and more.
