DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – Students involved in JROTC showed off everything they learned in the 12th annual military drill competition Saturday morning.
The American Legion Riders Chapter 15 with addition to the American Legion Family hosted the event to give over 170 North Alabama JROTC and Civil Air Patrol students a chance to compete at both individual and team levels.
Marsha King with the American Legion Riders talked about the significance of students being involved in a JROTC program.
“It’s not just about getting students to join the military,” King said. “Majority of students who are in JROTC don’t join the military but they learn a lot about discipline, a lot about education and a lot about teamwork. Those are qualities they are going to use as adults.”
Morgan County American Legion Post 15 Commander Joseph Woodbury agreed, adding that support can go a long way in a young person’s life.
“This is our nation’s future out there and we want to support them in every facet of their training so hopefully, they’ll get some benefit out of that,” Woodbury said.
Trophies, scholarships and cash prizes were handed out to winners at the event.
