LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Universities from around Southwest Louisiana came together Saturday for the Chem-E regional competition.
Chemical engineering students were tasked with building a car about the size of a backpack that runs on a chemical reaction.
“We’ve been working on this for probably three to four months now,” said McNeese State University Team Captain Austin Ingram. “Serious hard work, every day at school. We’ve been staying at school every day until almost 12 at night. We only have this class two days a week but it consumes all of our time and weekends.”
To win, the cars must be able to travel a certain distance. The hard part is that they don’t get to know how far the cars must be able to travel until an hour before they compete.
Last semester, Ingram competed at the national competition. He said that with all the knowledge he learned there, he is proud to have the opportunity to lead this team.
“Well, shout out to my teammates,” said Ingram. “I hold the captain position, but it is an extremely equal amount of participation and respect for one another. I couldn’t do it without them. I’m just happy to have the teammates and friends that I do have.”
The team placed second overall in the competition.
