- OpenAI’s ChatGPT is facing notable changes, including geographical restrictions and feature delays.
- Apple Silicon Mac users can now avail of ChatGPT services with a customized desktop app.
OpenAI, a market leader in generative artificial intelligence technology, is facing significant challenges with ChatGPT, which is undergoing some key updates. This includes the delay of an anticipated feature, restrictions on users in specific countries, and a notable change to the macOS application.
Voice Mode Feature Delayed
OpenAI has stated that the launch of ChatGPT’s highly anticipated voice mode feature is set to be delayed. The feature allows users to interact with ChatGPT using voice commands, significantly enhancing applications and accessibility. It could support visually impaired users or even professionals who want to use the artificial intelligence (AI) tool on the go. Consequently, it could find a place in the operations of virtual assistants, customer service centers, and EdTech institutions.
However, OpenAI has stated its need for further improvements in performance and accuracy as the reason behind the delay. Accuracy concerning various languages and accents and meeting internal reliability and safety checks will prove critical for a successful global rollout. This is likely to be a challenging task. So far, the new release date has not been made public.

Restrictions on Access in Unsupported Countries
OpenAI is also restricting access to ChatGPT in certain countries. Due to regulatory challenges, ChatGPT will become inaccessible in some regions. This will be done by blocking API traffic from unsupported countries.
The global geopolitical situation has played a notable role in these developments, with countries having many variations in data privacy laws, technology use, and AI ethics. Consequently, users from China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea cannot access AI services.
According to OpenAI, malicious actors from these countries were using ChatGPT to develop malware and run phishing campaigns. Furthermore, the tensions between China and the US are also suspected to have contributed to the decision.
Despite the rapid expansion of OpenAI’s business, such restrictions have raised concerns among potential users about the company’s capabilities to manage complex international law. This development highlights similar challenges faced by tech companies globally, where they must balance compliance and the need for innovation.
ChatGPT Is Available for Mac Users
In a more positive development, Mac users now have easier access to ChatGPT. The company announced the integration of Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices with the chatbot. With the new update, Mac users can bring up the ChatGPT application with the Option + Space key combination once the app is installed.
Once opened, the chatbot appears as a chat interface overlaying the screen. ChatGPT integrations with iPhones and iPads are expected to be made available shortly. However, this subscription-free model is only available to Apple Silicon Macs. Intel-powered Macs have to wait for their update.
The move will likely improve user engagement and is expected to be viewed positively by OpenAI. The developments arising from tech advancements and geopolitical issues are expected to continue shaping OpenAI’s policies for the foreseeable future.
