The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has made it mandatory for all individual taxpayers, except for four specific categories, to submit their income tax returns online for the 2025-26 tax year, starting tomorrow (4 August).
The directive was issued in a special order today (3 August).
According to the order, tax returns must now be submitted through the portal www.etaxnbr.gov.bd, with exemptions applying only to senior taxpayers aged 65 or above; taxpayers with physical disabilities or special needs (with a valid certificate); Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad; legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers.
However, taxpayers under these exempted groups may still choose to file online if they wish.
The NBR stated that if any other individual taxpayer encounters problems registering for the e-return system, they may apply to their respective deputy tax commissioner with specific reasons by 31 October.
Upon approval from the concerned additional or joint tax commissioner, such taxpayers may be permitted to file their returns in paper format.
NBR issued the order under the authority granted by sub-section (4) of section 328 of the Income Tax Act, 2023.
