Marco Rubio gave a presentation before Congress about immigration and what we are giving them as a country as opposed to what our own citizens receive. And WWL’s Newell Normand was shaken by it.
Rubio said this: “One of the things I see a lot in South Florida are people that have been in this country that maybe came from Cuba 45 years ago. They’ve worked here their entire lives. They retire. They get $800, $900, $1,000 a month of Social Security, and then they run into somebody who just got here from Cuba three months ago. He’s 29 years old, doesn’t work, and is given $1,500 a month in benefits by the government because they’re refugees. That refugee, a year later, is traveling back to Cuba 15 times. So you’re a refugee fleeing oppression from a place that you now go back and visit 15 times the following year. And in the meantime, we’re giving you Medicaid, food stamps, health care for your children, cash payments from the refugee fund. So imagine if you’ve been working here for 40 years, and your Social Security check is smaller than the benefits going to a 28 year old, able bodied person who just got here. That’s real. That happens. That’s happening every day. That makes no sense.”
Newell said it’s absolute craziness that people coming in across the border get freebies while there are American children hungry when they go to bed. Workers who can’t buy groceries, can’t afford health care so they miss doctor’s visits or can’t pay for medication.
“So we will continue to make these payments to individuals that’s going to be far greater than your benefit under your Social Security plan that you have funded for 30 or 40 years of your life,” Newell said. “And the benefit that you’re going to get is going to be less than someone who crosses the border yesterday. Claims refugee status. Claims asylum. All of the NGOs. Who actually knows that you’re here illegally facilitating the processing of applications to access dollars from all over the place. And you’re struggling to buy bread, milk, peanut butter and otherwise to put on your table because of the limited assets you have from Social Security. And they’re doing better.
“And this administration really believes that we should be excited about this. This is something that we should embrace. We should be excited about. This is an example and emblematic of being moral and the like. Because you’ve not suffered enough. You’ve not given enough. You’ve not made enough sacrifice in your life. Yet, according to Democrats, there’s more for you to give.”
Normand was truly outraged at the tales of refugees who claim they were oppressed in their home country, take our money, and then go back and visit their homeland numerous times a year.
“We’re feeding them. We’re housing them. We’re providing jobs for them. Sustenance for them from day one,” he said. “They’re doing better than you. Having worked 40 years and drawing on your Social Security. You can’t pay your electric bill. You can’t pay your other utility bills. If you have a car, give it up because you can’t afford the gas … But if you’re a refugee, you claim to be oppressed, and you’re going back to visit the country, that country that’s oppressed you. And meanwhile, U.S. citizens continue to finance your alleged oppression.”
