“It’s been incredible to see our community shape this idea together — and now we get to test it,” said Katie Mosher of Mayerthorpe Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).
SIL described the lunch event as “a fun test of what future projects in the community could feel like.”
The day will feature food from restaurants in the region, family activities, a spice blend station and local art, according to SIL.
The pop-up lunch will also have a cookbook station where residents can bring recipes meaningful to them, possibly from their cultures or families.
Recipes may be added to a Mayerthorpe Community Cookbook, according to SIL.

“All we ask is that you bring a recipe,” Mosher said in a statement. “Everything else is free.”
SIL, which was established by United Way of Calgary and Area, works with locals, non-profits and businesses to address community issues.
SIL representatives were invited to Mayerthorpe in 2024 to consider changes in the community, including newcomers to Canada having bought businesses here.
That’s grown the town’s population, and Mayor Janet Jabush said that led to questions about whether there would be greater pressures on town facilities and staff. SIL is also exploring inclusion and welcoming newcomers to the community.
Mosher said that Mayerthorpe FCSS has been involved in the Mayerthorpe Design Lab project since “day one.”
“This event is part of a broader design lab approach that’s happening across the province,” Brittany Vine, SIL project director, said in a statement.
“We use design methods like interviews and rapid prototyping to help communities across Alberta take charge of their own solutions.
“In Mayerthorpe, we’re exploring how food and community belonging intersect.”
According to SIL, the pop-up lunch will be used to gather feedback.
