JEFFERSON — Students from Jefferson Area High School earned a 16th-place finish out of 32 competing teams in the National Academic Quiz Tournament small school state tournament in Sandusky.
Zane Ketola, Reagan Williams and Gino Giblock traveled to Sandusky to compete with other high school “small school” teams from all over the state of Ohio.
Alyssa Berrier, team advisor, said Jefferson finished third in the Ashtabula County Scholastic Bowl Tournament and was then offered the opportunity to compete in Sandusky.
“Jefferson is the only school in the county to compete in the event since 2018,” Berrier said.
Edgewood High School finished fifth in the state at the 2018 event.
“It was a good experience to compete against teams from around the state. It also provided quite a challenge when going against teams that had perviously attended national-level competitions,” team captain Ketola said in an email. “We got extremely unlucky on some games’ bonuses and by the last two games, mental fatigue had sent in, leading tou our loss in our final game.”
Berrier said the three students who competed are juniors and will be back next year.
“The Quiz Bowl team is looking forward to next season. … It has been a competitive season and I am very proud of the students. We have a great group of students on the team and I can not wait to see what next year brings,” she said.
The ACSB Tournament occurred in mid-March at Kent State Ashtabula, where Geneva High School won the tournament and Saint John School finished second.
