OTTAWA COUNTY — Students from several local high schools teamed up to find success at a statewide broiler competition in early November.
A group of students from the Ottawa Area ISD’s Careerline Tech Center competed in the Michigan Future Farmers of America Broiler Contest in Fowlerville from Nov. 5-8. The team took third overall, out of nearly 500 competitors, and won one of the four days.
The team consisted of students in the Agricultural and Animal Science Program at CTC, including Haylee Allen, a senior at Zeeland West; Olivia Klein, a senior at Grand Haven High School; Avary Limon, a junior at Zeeland West High; Yadriel Ostolaza, a senior at Holland Public Schools; Kailee Sisson, a junior at Saugatuck High School; and Aiva Smith, a senior at Black River School.
Prior to the event, competitors received chicks from the same hatchery and used their shared agricultural skills to monitor and raise them for five weeks. Broiler chickens are fast-growing and raised specifically for meat production.
