Around 800,000 freelancers and self-employed professionals in Greece have until January 31 to select one of six insurance categories for 2025, covering basic and additional insurance as well as lump sum payments.
The most popular choice in previous years—selected by 90% of freelancers—has been the first insurance category, which costs €255 per month for basic insurance and health care, or €331 per month when additional insurance and a lump sum payment are included. However, this category results in a pension of no more than €700 after 30 years of contributions.
The third insurance category is recommended for those aiming for higher pensions. Basic insurance and health care cost €362 per month, or €470 per month when additional benefits and a lump sum are added. Professionals insured under this category for more than 30 years can achieve a pension exceeding €1,000.
In 2025, freelancers’ contributions will be adjusted based on inflation, with a 2.7% increase expected. New monthly contributions for the lowest category will start at €254.65, up by €6.43. Newly self-employed individuals with less than five years of experience will have a special reduced contribution of €156.43.
The e-EFKA online service for selecting or changing insurance categories remains open until January 31. If no changes are made, contributors will automatically remain in their current category. Experts estimate that those insured for 40 years in the lowest category will receive a pension of around €800, while those with 30 years of contributions will receive slightly over €600. Choosing higher categories is key to securing a pension above €1,000.
