Freelancers and Side Hustlers, Your Estimated Taxes Are Due Soon. Here's When to Pay

Tax time can be rough for freelancers and side hustlers, especially if you didn’t save enough money to cover your tax bill. April 15 isn’t just the day your 2024 tax bill is due — it’s also the deadline to pay your first estimated quarterly tax payment for 2025. 

For most workers, automatic tax withholding makes paying your taxes relatively painless. The same can’t be said if you’re one of the millions earning freelance income. If you have a side hustle, take on contract work or are self-employed, you’re required to pay estimated taxes on your earnings four times a year. Failing to pay enough in estimated taxes throughout the year can cost you.

“If you have made timely estimated tax payments/withholding and you owe less than $1,000, there is no interest as long as you pay the amount due by April 15th,” said Eric Bronnenkant, CPA, CFP and head of Tax at Betterment. 

While you may not be able to avoid IRS self-employment penalties for 2024 if you’ve already missed payments, you can prevent incurring penalties next year by paying your 2025 estimated taxes on time. The estimated tax filing process can be complicated, but we’re here to simplify it for you. Here’s everything you need to know to calculate your taxes and file on time.

What are estimated taxes?

If you earn or receive income that isn’t subject to federal withholding taxes throughout the year — side hustle earnings or income from a rental property, for example — you’ll pay as you go with estimated taxes. Estimated tax is a quarterly payment based on your income for the period. Essentially, estimated tax allows you to prepay a portion of your income tax every few months to avoid paying a lump sum when your tax return is due.

When are estimated taxes due?

Estimated taxes are due quarterly, usually on the 15th day of April, June, September and January of the following year. One notable exception is if the 15th falls on a legal holiday or a weekend. In those cases, you must file your return by the next workday.

Who has to pay estimated taxes?

If you filled out the IRS W-4 form, which provides directions for your employer about how much to withhold from each paycheck, you might not need to pay estimated taxes. If you aren’t a W-4 salaried employee, you probably need to keep estimated tax payments on your radar. According to the IRS, you generally have to make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe tax of $1,000 or more when your return is filed, and if your employment type falls into one of these categories: 

• Independent contractor or freelancer
• Sole proprietor
• Partner
• S corporation shareholder

Other sources of income that fall under the estimated tax umbrella include:

• Dividends and interest earned from investment sales
• Royalties for past work
• Landlord rental income
• Alimony
• Unemployment benefits
• Retirement benefits
• Social Security benefits, if you have other sources of income 
• Prizes and awards

You may also need to pay estimated tax as a full-time employee if your employer isn’t withholding enough from your salary. To update your W-4 with the correct withholding amount, use the IRS Tax WIthholding Estimator tool, complete a new W-4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate form and submit it to your employer.

Estimated taxes are due, regardless of whether you’re paid by direct deposit, check or digital payment services like PayPal, CashApp, Zelle or Venmo. Third party payment platforms are required to send you a 1099-K tax form if you made more than $2,500 on the platform in 2025. For the 2026 tax year, the threshold will drop to $600.

How do I calculate my estimated taxes?

There are a few ways to calculate your quarterly tax payments depending on your business model and annual earnings. 

• If you earn a steady income, estimate the tax you’ll owe for the year and send one-fourth to the IRS each quarter. You’ll also need to include self-employment taxes.

• If your income varies throughout the year, you can estimate your tax burden based on your income and deductions in the previous quarter. The IRS Estimated Tax Worksheet can help you do the math.

If you’ve overestimated your earnings at the end of the year, you can complete a 1040-ES form to receive a refund or apply your overpayment to future quarterly taxes. If you underpaid taxes, the form can help you calculate what you still owe. 

How do I pay my estimated taxes?

When filing your estimated taxes, use the 1040-ES IRS tax form, or the 1120-W form if you’re filing as a corporation. You can fill out the form manually with the help of the included worksheets, or you can rely on your favorite tax software or tax adviser to walk you through the process and get the job done. From there, you can pay your federal taxes by mail or online through the IRS website. You’ll also find a complete list of accepted payment methods and options, including installment plans.

Do I also have to pay estimated state taxes?

It depends. If you live in one of the few US states with no income tax, your responsibility ends with the estimated federal taxes we’ve discussed. If your state does levy income taxes, you will make estimated tax payments using the same deadlines as for federal taxes. Visit your state’s Department of Revenue website or consult your tax adviser or tax software service for more personalized information. 

What if I don’t pay my estimated taxes?

It’s a good idea to post a calendar reminder as the quarterly deadline approaches to avoid paying a late penalty. You may be charged a penalty if: 

• You owe more than $1,000 in taxes after subtracting withholdings and credits.
• You paid less than 90% of the tax for the current year through estimated taxes.

“For freelancers and those with side hustles, it’s sometimes challenging to estimate taxes accurately due to fluctuating income,” said Dana Ronald, president of Tax Crisis Institute. “Aim to pay at least 90% of the tax you’ll owe for the current year or 100% of the tax you paid the previous year, whichever is smaller. This can help you avoid penalties.”

What if I underpaid my 2024 estimated taxes?

If you haven’t paid enough in estimated taxes in any quarter for 2024, you may not be able to avoid penalties entirely. Getting current now won’t negate any interest that you owe for underpayments during previous quarters, but it can reduce the amount you’ll owe.

You can also increase your tax payments through other sources to help offset underpayment penalties, said Gail Rosen, a tax specialist and CPA in New Jersey.  If you also are a W-2 employee, you can increase your withholding amount by adjusting your W-4 through your workplace or SSI office at any time during the year.

Can I avoid paying estimated taxes? 

Probably not without incurring those penalties. Some classes of workers are exempt from having to make quarterly payments to Uncle Sam, particularly those whose income is exceptionally modest, or those for whom the following apply:

• If your net earnings were $400 or less for the quarter, you don’t have to pay estimated taxes; although you still have to file a tax return even if no taxes are due.
• If you were a US citizen or resident alien for all of last year, your total tax was zero and you didn’t have to file an income tax return.
• If your income fluctuates drastically throughout the year (if you run a seasonal business, for instance), you may be able to lower or eliminate your estimated tax payments with an annualized income installment method. Refer to the IRS’s 2-7 worksheet to see if you qualify.
