SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WIFR) – The act protects independent contractors in Illinois.
Starting July 1, freelance workers with products or services valued at $500 or more in a 120-day period are entitled to:
- A written contract with an outline of the products and services to be provided, including the dates by which they are to be completed
- The rate and method of payment
- Full payment by the date written in the contract or within 30 days of the completion of the service
- Protection from retaliation and/or other negative reaction for exercising rights under the FWPA
“The Freelance Worker Protection Act establishes a framework of understandable and transparent expectations for independent workers in Illinois, to better protect their work, and compensation,” said Illinois Department of Labor Director Jane Flanagan.
The law only applies to freelance contracts taking effect after July 1.
