Saeed Abu Nabhan, a 25-year-old freelance cameraman for Anadolu Agency, was tragically killed on January in a long-range rifle attack by the Israeli military in Gaza. Abu Nabhan, who leaves behind a wife and a child, was fatally shot while covering the ongoing violence in the region.
The incident occurred in the Al-Jadeed Refugee Camp, located in the central Gaza Strip’s Nuseirat region. Prior to the attack, the Israeli military had surrounded the area, which was known to be occupied by several journalists. Shortly thereafter, the military targeted individuals in the vicinity, Caliber.Az reports citing Turkish media.
Footage from the scene shows a wounded person being rushed out of a house on a stretcher, assisted by aid workers. As Abu Nabhan filmed the scene, he was seen attempting to flee while carrying his camera equipment. At that moment, he was struck by what appeared to be a long-range rifle shot.
Abu Nabhan collapsed to the ground and remained motionless. Those nearby hesitated to approach him, fearing they too would be targeted by Israeli gunfire. The official Palestinian news agency Wafa confirmed that the cameraman had died from the attack.
In a separate incident, at least one person was reported dead following an Israeli airstrike on a house in Gaza’s Shuja’iyya neighborhood. The deceased and the injured were transferred to Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital for treatment.
Abu Nabhan’s death has brought the number of Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli military attacks in Gaza to 203 since October 7, 2023. Reports also indicate that 399 journalists have been injured, with 43 others taken captive.
The ongoing Israeli military campaign, described by many as genocidal, has resulted in the deaths of over 46,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children, since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. This comes despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the region.
