The FHSAA’s Board of Directors voted unanimously today to approve a money-making NIL policy for high school athletics. The board chair calls the new NIL policy a good start but added that the policy is not set in stone and can be tweaked in the future.
Florida is now the 36th state to adopt NIL language that will allow high school student-athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness as of the 2024-25 school year.
One complaint was that the new NIL policy “does not allow student-athletes to be compensated for their skill levels.”
As it stands high school athletes will not be allowed to play for pay and NIL cannot be used as a recruiting tool.
Only parents and guardians may negotiate NIL deals, and the use of school logos and uniforms is banned.
Consequences for violations may be punishable by a formal warning to athletic bans.
