Eleven-year-old Monica Bina has been involved in 4-H for the last three years, and has been to the North Dakota State Fair for each of them. She said it is a family tradition, as her mother, Rachel Bina, explained that they own a grain farm in eastern North Dakota.
Monica has a variety of projects this year, including her rabbit; a goat that her sister shows; music, with which she plays the piano; communications, for which she gives speeches; arts such as painting and drawing; sewing; and her favorite, her horse.
Monica and her horse took first place at the Walsh County Fair this year, then moved forward to the State Fair, where they received a second-place ribbon for horse showmanship. She said she really enjoys her projects and pointed out several which she favors, like sewing.
As she was getting her things packed and preparing her horse for the journey home, she was already planning on competing at the fair again next year. When asked if she wants to keep doing 4-H every year, she excitedly replied, “Oh yeah”
