Privacy-centered browser DuckDuckGo now allows its users to anonymously use artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like Open AI’s GPT 3.5 Turbo, Anthropic’s Claude 3 Haiku, Meta Llama 3 and Mistral’s Mixtral 8x7B. The new feature is called AI Chat and is “free to use within a day limit”.
DuckDuckGo AI Chat can also be turned off if required. The company says that it plans to add more chat models and browser entry points.
“We view AI Chat and search as two different but powerful tools to help you find what you’re looking for – especially when you’re exploring a new topic,” said the company in a blog post.
How does DuckDuckGo AI chat work?
The company says that users will have an option to pick a chat model of their choice. Currently, it supports OpenAI’s GPT 3.5 Turbo, Anthropic’s latest generation Claude 3 Haiku, Mixtral 8x7B and Meta Llama 3.
Once they have chosen the chat model, they can begin using it just like any other chat interface. “Just like searches on DuckDuckGo, all chats are completely anonymous: they cannot be traced back to any one individual,” the company says.
In the blog post, the company explains that the chat models are accessed using its IP address, instead of using the user’s IP address. “This way it looks like the requests are coming from us and not you”.
In addition, DuckDuckGo does not save or store any chats. However, it may temporarily store chats to respond with answers and ensure all systems are working, the company says.
“..but there’s no way for them to tie chats back to you, personally, since all metadata is removed,” it adds.
Paid option coming soon
DuckDuckGo AI Chat is free to use, within a daily limit. But the company says that it is “exploring a paid plan for access to higher limits and more advanced (and costly) chat models.”
