China has upped its artificial intelligence game by implanting the thoughts and beliefs of President Xi Jinping into their version of ChatGPT, the Financial Times reported this week.
The Chinese regulatory body, Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has fed state approved literature into their artificial intelligence (AI) product, according to a source of the outlet. The CAC has powered the large language model (LLM) with the writings of Xi known as “Xi Jinping Thought” or “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.” The philosophy emphasizes the leadership of the Communist Party, the significance of Chinese-style socialism, and the goal of reviving China, as noted in TechStory.
The chatbot has been appropriately named “Chat Xi PT” in a direct reference to Microsoft’s popular ChatGPT. The release of the chatbot is in line with China’s vision of how AI will play out in Chinese society, ensuring that whatever comes out of the generative AI bot will “embody core socialist values” and will not “contain any content that subverts state power.”
The Chinese chatbot aims to maintain the government’s influence over its populace by seeding state-approved philosophies into all responses. Chat Xi PT will provide several features raging from education content, daily updates, interactive learning models, and cultural and historical insights, all of which have will be presented in a language and philosophy consistent with the Xi’s ideology.
As noted by TechStory, younger generations are more likely to engage with digital platforms enabling the Chinese Communist Party to seed their influence consistently across all of the chatbots many uses.
While those in the West may criticize China for implementing an ideology into its AI programming, Open AI’s ChatGPT has been shown to have a left-wing bias of its own, according to researchers. A paper from the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University, and Xi’an Jiaotong University, found that ChatGPT and GPT-4, were the most left-wing of the 14 AI models tested.
