Update: OpenAI appears to have resolved the issue and updated status.openai.com with “All Systems Operational.” The outage lasted for around five hours, according to Downdetector.com.
Original Story:
ChatGPT stopped working this afternoon, the second major outage for the chatbot in June.
“We are currently investigating elevated error rates impacting ChatGPT,” OpenAI says in a message posted at 11:39 Pacific Time. The reason for the outage is not yet known.
People around the world are reporting they are unable to use the tool. “Should I submit PTO? I hate working without ChatGPT,” says one Reddit user. “Please let this be voice update,” said another, referring to the upcoming launch of Voice Mode for the GPT-4o model.
Not all ChatGPT users may experience an outage, and the number of reported incidents is declining as of this writing, according to Downdetector.com. (Note: Downdetector is owned by PCMag parent company Ziff Davis.)

The last time ChatGPT went down was on June 4. OpenAI promptly fixed the issue, but then the tool went down again a few hours later. ChatGPT also had some trouble in May, when a four-day stretch brought intermittent outages and service delays.
Over the past 90 days, OpenAI says ChatGPT has achieved 99.42% uptime, the lowest reliability of the four services it tracks at status.openai.com. “99.4% really isn’t very good for what’s become a business-critical tool for so many,” says one X user.
