ChatGPT and Gemini not working? You are not alone as several users report error in OpenAI

When ChatGPT launched back in November 2022, the world marvelled at its capabilities. From writing long essays and composing poetry to helping students with writing assignments, the AI tool slowly became a part of people’s lives. Similarly, Google’s Gemini (earlier called Bard) was launched in February last year as a competitor to ChatGPT. Both AI chatbots are used by million across the world which is why when they stop working, it doesn’t go unnoticed. Both ChatGPT and Gemini were down for users across India for a couple of minutes on Friday morning. Users also took to social media to complain about the issue.

Downdetector had also showed that the apps were hit by an error. Meanwhile, ChatGPT’s mobile app for both iOS and Android was working fine. OpenAI had also acknowledged the issue on its status page. After the chatbot started working, the status page also got updated. The outage, in case of ChatGPT, lasted for about 27 minutes as per OpenAI’s updates page.

Users on social media had reported the issue. While some saw an error while trying to talk to the AI chatbots, others saw a blank page on ChatGPT. Some users had also shared that all of their previous conversations seemed to disappear.

“Chatgpt is down again. Even gemini is not working. Anyone else facing this issue,” wrote a user while another one said, “Chatgpt down? getting this blank page which is also not responding to any messages!”

This wasn’t the first time that ChatGPT had a massive outage that was reported by users. In January this year too, OpenAI had acknowledged that the AI chatbot was suffering through an outage. In November last year as well, several users reported that ChatGPT was down for them.

As mentioned already, while ChatGPT made its debut in November 2022, Gemini was introduced in February 2023 and is a relatively new chatbot. Earlier called Bard, it was capable of responding to questions in a human-like manner. Eventually, Gemini also gained image generation capabilities but found itself embroiled in controversy after it refused to generate images of white people. As a result, Google had paused Gemini’s ability to generate images of people. The feature has not been restored yet.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, doesn’t have image generation capabilities and can only respond to queries in form of text.
