ChatGPT has been the go-to artificial intelligence writing tool to help students with their homework and assignments. Even though there are tools to detect the work of AI easily, one student decided to give ChatGPT its due credit for helping her breeze through her school year. However, her public confession landed her in a pickle. Dee–who goes by @decayingpeach on TikTok–posted a video on her page, seemingly filmed at her graduation ceremony, where she was wearing an interesting attire.
In the video that gained popularity and the attention of her school’s administration, the graduating student flashed a T-shirt design under her graduation robes. “Congrats on graduation! What helped with the school year?” the person filming Dee speaks off-camera as she starts showing her red graduation gown and striking some poses. Then she unzips her gown to reveal the T-shirt that read, “I love ChatGPT.” However, there is more on the T-shirt. Dee turns around to show the back of her T-shirt and there is another chunk of text at the bottom. “I wouldn’t be here without you,” the print on the back of her T-shirt reads, along with the motif of a graduation cap.
A few seconds later, someone intervenes while Dee is filming her video and the viewers can hear a voice saying, “Excuse me.” The clip immediately shifts to Dee sitting quietly in a room and possibly getting interrogated by some school authorities. “And if that is what happened to get you on the high honors roll, then we will have to review your marks,” someone says from off camera as Dee meekly replies with a “mmm-hmm.” The video has garnered over 14 million views so far and counting.
Upon scrolling through her TikTok account, the viewers can find an older video of Dee with goth makeup. In that video, she asked her followers to share their suggestions on whether or not she should wear the ChatGPT T-shirt she made, intending to put it on during her graduation ceremony. The video gained thousands of comments and over 1 million views as well. It turns out she ignored all the advice given to her by thoughtful commentators and went with her original plan, claiming in the video that she would be doing it because she felt it was funny.
TikTok users shared their opinions and reactions to Dee’s video as she realized that wearing the ChatGPT T-shirt wasn’t a good idea after all. @maddy.yg wrote, “Can they not see the person recording? I would’ve just said it was a joke for TikTok. If this is for real, I swear to get, I am going to lose it.” @d_squishy shared, “I don’t know what they expect. Educators need to be mad at the creators of AI software, not the students who are merely using all resources available to get that overpriced piece of paper that says they’re qualified to be paid a living wage.” @katchy_kadabra commented, “ChatGPT can be very helpful. However, you cannot just grab the paraphrasing or the summaries they use because it’s still not your wording, even if it’s original.”
