CalMatters is looking for a talented, part-time program manager with education experience and program management skills to implement and manage the CalMatters for Learning program over a 12-month period. The ideal person for this role can start as soon as possible.
Launched in 2022, CalMatters for Learning is a partnership between CalMatters and the state’s local libraries. This online learning hub for California library staff offers education curriculum and activities to inform library staff and guide conversations in with community members about issues important to them and other Californians.
As an independent contractor, we estimate you will work 5 hours per week (20 hours per month) for 12-months where you’ll be responsible for the management of the CalMatters for Learning program starting in July 2024. Each month, you’ll plan, write, and produce education curriculum and other online materials for a content package based on a CalMatters reporting topic or issue, schedule and coordinate one online Zoom event each month in conjunction with each monthly content package, communicate with librarian staff, handle monthly marketing outreach to library staff and others to promote each package, participate in online and in-person meetings with library staff, and other responsibilities as needed.
Scope of responsibilities :
Weekly program management throughout the 12-months of the CalMatters for Learning program lifecycle.
- Plan, write, and create education curriculum and other online materials as part of monthly content packages, based on CalMatters stories and reporting topics, to meet internal and external deadlines.
- Schedule and coordinate one online Zoom event each month in conjunction with each monthly content package.
- Manage communications and event marketing with library staff and others.
- Participate in online and in-person meetings with library staff for three hours per month.
- Facilitate communication among CalMatters staff as needed.
Required qualifications:
- Experience as an educator, teacher, or curriculum writer.
- Interest in news and issues related to California.
- Experience writing and developing content into education curricula and activities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Friendly and professional.
- Project manager skills: high level of attention to detail, effective time management, meeting deadlines on time, and ability to communicate well with internal and external partners.
- Availability and flexibility to work 5 hours per week (20 hours per month).
- Available immediately to take on this role and can commit to a 12-month contract.
- Based near Sacramento or San Francisco Bay Area, California.
Nice-to-haves:
- Journalism and/or nonprofit experience.
- Basic video editing skills using software such as Adobe Video or others.
- Experience using Zoom and Splash event management platform, or other similar event management platforms.
- Experience using AirTable.
- Previous work as a freelance, independent contractor.
How to Apply
