JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — Some students at Broome-Tioga BOCES are preparing to travel to Atlanta to compete in the Skills USA national competition.
The students who range in areas of study from carpentry, video production and nail care won their state tournament in Syracuse earlier this year earning them a bid to the national competition next week. Micah Gray, a carpentry student at Broome-Tioga BOCES said that the material he earned in class throughout the year prepared him for the competitions.
“For my competition, we had to build a bench that opened up,” Gray told 12 News. “I had done similar stuff in the class to practice and get ready for it. So, I felt pretty prepared for it.”
Although it is a super exciting experience for the students to be able to showcase their talents against other students all across the United States, many of the students were a little bit nervous about the competition as well.
“I feel like a lot of people are counting on me, so it’s a lot of pressure but it’s really fun,” said Shayla Limbert a video student, and her partner in the project Justin Vanderburg said. “Every day I get a little bit more nervous but a little more excited too.”
The students aren’t the only ones competing in a national tournament, their skills advisor at Broome-Tioga BOCES Angel Mead is in the final five in the nation for Skills USA advisor of the year. Mead said she is just as nervous as the students.
Mead told 12 News,” Honestly, it’s a little nerve-wracking. It’s very nerve-racking and I kind of feel like the kids do right now because when we get there on Sunday night into Monday or Tuesday.
The competitions begin next week where Angel and students will go through their assignments and hopefully bring home some hardware to the Southern Tier.
