Hebbia, a startup that uses generative AI to search large documents and respond to large questions, has raised a $130 million Series B at a roughly $700 million valuation led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Index Ventures, Google Ventures and Peter Thiel. And its funding demonstrates that 50x annual recurring revenue (ARR) is becoming the norm for AI startups, especially ones that have booked millions of profitable revenue early in their journey. The formal funding announcement confirmed most of the details previously reported by TechCrunch, although Hebbia continued to raise more funds, another $30 million, after our report. But…

Jones’ long standing efforts to protect off-road motorcycle competitions in California advanced last week with the unanimous, bipartisan approval of Senate Bill 708 in the Assembly Transportation Committee. Jones’ bill establishes a permit for Californians to operate off-road motorcycles, or off-highway vehicles at sanctioned events, creating a permit program for competition motorcycles. Currently, the California Air Resources Board oversees the registration of all OHVs except competition motorcycles. The board decided to end the Red Sticker registration program in 2021, with…

When office workers stopped working in offices in 2020, trading their cubicles for living room couches during COVID-19 lockdowns, many began questioning those hours they had spent commuting to work. All those rushed mornings stuck in traffic could have been spent getting things done? Life was often lonely for those stuck in their homes, but people found something to appreciate when birdsong rang through the quiet streets. And the temporary dip in travel had the side effect of cutting global carbon emissions by 7 percent in 2020 — a blip of good news in an otherwise miserable year.As reported by…
EXCLUSIVE: Freelance casting assistants are one step closer to gaining representation from the Teamsters. Following a virtual meeting Monday night with nearly 100 casting assistants, the group is officially moving forward with a National Labor Relations Board election. The union announced the intent to represent them in April. The unit will require a simple majority to achieve union representation. If approved, it will allow freelance casting assistants to be unionized under both Teamsters Local 399 (Los Angeles) and Teamsters Local 817 (New York). They would join the existing bargaining unit of casting directors and associate casting directors. Deadline understands that…
Love it or hate it, AI is here and being used to do everything, from improving social media postings, to writing grant proposals and creating images that didn’t really exist. But what if we used it for good? I was at a recent photography coffee and chat session and the topic came up with image review via AI. I decided to give it a try. Using Chat GPT for image review I jumped on Chat GPT. Other programs are available, but not all will review portraits. I asked Chat GPT, “Give a review of this image, what could be done…

Are we on the verge of Hot TV Robot Summer? This week on HBO, Julio Torres’ delightfully, defiantly weird comedy Fantasmas is finishing up its first season, and one of the main characters is Bibo, a helpful yet pushy household robot whose secret desire is to become an actor. Now comes Apple TV’s Sunny, where the chipper but potentially troublesome robot is the title character, and core focus of the plot. One more, and it’s officially a trend! Adapted by Katie Robbins (The Affair) from Colin O’Sullivan’s book The Dark Manual, the series takes place in an alternate near-future version…
