Apple Inc. is nearing a deal with OpenAI Inc. to use the company’s technology in the iPhone as part of a broader effort to integrate artificial intelligence into its devices, people familiar with the matter said.
The two countries are finalizing terms of an agreement to use ChatGPT functionality in Apple’s next iPhone operating system, iOS 18, the people said on condition of anonymity. Apple is also in talks with Google’s Alphabet about licensing its Gemini chatbot. No agreement could be reached in these discussions, but they are continuing.
The OpenAI deal will allow Apple to offer its popular chatbot as part of a range of new AI features expected to launch next month. Bloomberg reported in April that talks with OpenAI were intensifying. However, there is no guarantee that a deal will be announced soon.
Representatives from Apple, OpenAI and Google declined to comment.
Apple plans to revolutionize the world of artificial intelligence with its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. As part of that, the company plans to run some of its future AI capabilities through data centers equipped with its processors, Bloomberg reported.
Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that he personally uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but added that “there are a lot of issues that need to be solved.” He promised that new AI features would be “very thoughtful” in Apple products would be introduced.
During Apple’s earnings call last week, he argued that Apple has an AI advantage.
“We believe in the transformative power and promise of artificial intelligence and believe we have advantages that will set us apart in this new era, including Apple’s unparalleled hardware, software and services,” Cook said.
