The eruption started with little advance warning, but shortly after the eruption began Marco alerts video and photo desks and Northern Europe news director David Keyton. He rushed to the scene filing first photos before then spent hours in -9-degree Celcius temperatures newsgathering for all formats. Despite strong winds, he produced stunning aerial video and photos that gave the full scale of the eruption occurring.
That first edit garnered more than 1,000 views on teletrax from over 160 clients. After some rest, he returned due the day to capture the parking lot of the Blue Lagoon covered in lava, interviewed volcanologists on site salvaging equipment, and filming the gradual progress of the lava flow over one of the main roads in the area.
Marco’s photos were used in the photos of the week of the Guardian, CNN, The Atlantic, Newsweek, MSN, The Washington Post, Time and more.
