Annual “Home Shoot” competition draws sports enthusiasts to Linn County on Saturday

This weekend, high school sports enthusiasts are competing in a shooting competition in Linn County.

More than 2,000 students — from 16 Iowa schools — are competing to show off some of their shooting skills at the Otter Creek Sports Club. That competition also called for a variety of disciplines to be showcased by the shooters, including:

Iowa’s News Now spoke with Aaron Bunce, Head Coach of the Kennedy Trap Club, Saturday to talk about the shooting competition.

“It allows us to get the kids in an environment where they learn the shooting sport early,” said Bunce. “They can learn responsibility and gun safety, and practice team building. That is one of the best elements of it as well. So, it’s nice because it brings them in to that environment in a safe way.”

The Kennedy Trap Club is a school-endorsed club that specializes in teaching skills needed to compete in state-sanctioned shooting competitions. The Kennedy Trap season officially started on March 5th with practices and will transition into the Iowa State Championship. That championship — ran by the Scholastic Clay Target Program — will run during the second week of June.
