SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A recent global survey by Freelancer.com reveals that generative AI adoption is leading to increased earnings and productivity among freelance workers, challenging concerns about AI-driven job displacement.
Widespread AI adoption
The study, which surveyed 4,363 freelancers between August and October 2024, found that 73% of freelancers are incorporating AI tools into their work, with 20% utilizing them consistently.
ChatGPT remains the dominant platform, preferred by 31% of freelancers, followed by Meta AI at 14% and Google Gemini at 12%.
Financial impact and productivity gains
Half of the surveyed freelancers reported higher earnings since adopting AI tools, while 27% maintained their previous income levels.
“While there’s a lot of concern that AI will take over jobs and cause freelancers to earn less, our
latest survey data shows otherwise,” said Matt Barrie, Chief Executive of Freelancer.com.
“Most freelancers report either earning the same or more than before the introduction of AI tooling, meaning they’re becoming much more productive and efficient in their work.”
Skill development and future outlook
Freelancers are actively adapting to the AI revolution, with 34% focusing on enhancing their writing skills. Design and photography skills have attracted 19% of freelancers, while 16% are developing expertise in data processing and analysis.
Despite the transformative impact of AI, concerns about job displacement vary across generations. Only 46% of respondents expressed serious concerns about AI replacement, while 34% reported being somewhat concerned, and 20% showed no concern.
The survey reveals a significant shift in work patterns, with 29% of freelancers reporting increased productivity and new opportunities, while 27% noted improvements in work accuracy.
“We expect to see more freelancers and businesses using generative AI tools in the near future,” Barrie added.
This transformation suggests that rather than replacing workers, AI is emerging as a powerful tool for enhancing freelance professionals’ capabilities and earning potential.
