JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) – Two barbecue establishments on the Coast captured two huge wins in Memphis this past weekend — in two different cooking competitions.
The Shed in Ocean Springs conquered Memphis in May, bringing home the World Grand Champion title while also winning the Whole Hog division for the fourth time.
“It’s an honor to win a world championship and we did it as a family, that’s the key,” said The Shed’s owner Brad Orrison.
Orrison and his sister Brooke Lewis are co-owners.
The Shed has had its ups and downs in 24 years of business. From 11 feet of water in Hurricane Katrina to a fire in 2012, Lewis says it’s the resilience of the workers and support from customers that keeps them going.
“We work hand in hand with the farmers and with everybody to make sure that we have the freshest product we do that same thing when we compete,” Lewis said. “For that reason, we were able to go outside of the walls at the restaurant and bring back these titles to Mississippi.”
Marcio Borguezan and his Hog Addiction team competed in the inaugural SmokeSlam BBQ festival also held in Memphis this past weekend.
The Pass Christian team won first place there and had a record 10 consecutive Grand Championship wins going into the SmokeSlam.
Borguezan said their South Mississippi roots are their greatest inspiration.
“The people that live here — they empower us and everything we do — are following. This is something really special,” Borguezan said.
Hog Addiction takes part in Hogs for the Cause in New Orleans, an event raising money for kids with brain cancer. They also fire up the grills and smokers when disaster strikes.
“Our community is incredible,” said James Bates of Hog Addiction. “They come together when we need if we announce that we’re going to a storm area to feed people step up.”
Lewis said The Shed will also be ready to serve during hurricane season.
“We feed people in natural disaster-hit areas,” she said. “We are blues, we’re beer, we’re barbeque. We are a family-food drinkery. There is also a larger purpose and that’s to give back to the community.”
