The New York Amsterdam News is looking for experienced freelance journalists.
We pay $80 per story, and $30 per photograph and significantly higher for longer, more deeply reported stories.
We are primarily, but not exclusively, looking for New York based freelancers interested in covering the following areas:
- General Assignment– Quick turn stories that can be reported and written in a few hours or a day, breaking news especially
- Public Safety– Going beyond the headlines to help our community to understand policy and how it impacts us
- Religion/Church and all things spirituality!
- Education– Primary, secondary and higher education coverage that explores this issue in the context of communities of color, especially in New York
- Environment– Climate change and its impact on communities of color in our region and beyond
- Arts: Especially local/small gallery openings; local music coverage
- Photography – We’re looking for freelance photographers who can cover breaking news, features, arts and take portraits

In your pitch please answer the following questions:
What is the story about? When is it happening or when did it happen? Who is being impacted? If appropriate, are there solutions to the challenges that you are writing about?
Has anyone else covered this story? If so, what makes your story different or deeper?
Who are the main subjects/sources that you will be interviewing/profiling? Are they willing to go on the record and be identified?
What do you see as the ideal length for your story and what is your proposed timeline for reporting and submitting a first draft?
