AI – Friend or Foe?
Vasilii asks Lee-Ann and KJ how AI has impacted their day-to-day and how they have engaged with it.
Lee-Ann says, “I haven’t really engaged a lot of AI yet, other than ChatGPT and some of the basic tools that are out there. We’ve certainly used it to help with publisher discovery. We’ve used it to help with content writing. It’s probably saved, I would say, about 25% of resource time for us.
“I don’t think AI is at the point where it can replace humans, certainly not, but it can help to augment. I think we should all be exploring it because it’s a new wave of technology and in this industry, when you are tech forward, you’re more successful.”
KJ comments, “I mean, there are different ways you can use AI and that’s the beauty of it. I usually use it within my campaigns or stuff that is researched. Usually when we were doing all the psychographics and all the demographic research and stuff like that. It used to take us a week and now it hardly takes a day to go out and complete everything.”
Vasilii adds, “I remember the time about 15 years ago with my first video blogs and so on, it took about a week to type these subtitles to make a transcription. Now I press one button, I do some corrections during 20 minutes and it’s ready. It’s done!”
The Importance of Having a Mentor
Lee-Ann raises the topic of mentorship, “The biggest tip I can give anybody that’s on the publisher side is to get yourself a mentor. Get yourself a mentor who’s come before you. It was one of the things that I did last year for myself is that I’ve got a mentor. I’ve got somebody that I could talk to about running my business, about growing my business and ways to focus. Because you’re so in the weeds when you’re running campaigns and doing things, that you actually forget to think about working on your business.
“Sometimes when I speak to publishers, they say, ‘Oh, everybody’s going into Africa. I’m going to go into Africa’. My question to you is always why? What’s your why? Why are you doing this? If you can answer that why, then you’ve got a good business plan. If you can’t answer the why and you’re just doing it because you’ve got FOMO and everybody else is – let’s face it, we all do it.”
