The TV presenter Kaye Adams said that controversial tax rules for the self-employed should be scrapped after HM Revenue & Customs reopened a £243,000 court battle against an IT consultant.
The journalist and regular panellist on the ITV programme Loose Women, recently won a ten-year battle over a £124,000 tax bill with her argument centred on whether she has been working as a freelancer or an employee. She has accused HMRC of “using taxpayers’ money to drag freelancers through the courts”.
Richard Alcock, an IT contractor was taken to court five years ago when HMRC argued that he was an employee and so liable for £243,000 in tax. A decision in the First-Tier Tribunal in November 2019 found in Alcock’s favour, however, last week
