The new Social Security retirement payment will reach only a specific group of United States citizens. This group may have the opportunity to get the check within a few hours and, in addition, will have an increase in payment thanks to the 2024 COLA.
In 2024, the April check can be as high as $4,873 for age retirement checks. For disability payments, Social Security can pay as much as $3,822. These figures are higher than in April of the previous year, so there is a noticeable change from one year to the next.
Who gets the new Social Security with the COLA included?
One of the great advantages of the COLA is that you don’t have to apply for it to have it available. The Social Security Administration increases each beneficiary’s check automatically each year. Therefore, as of January of this year 2024 retirees have seen an increase in benefits in their checks.
So this April’s payment will be the same as in previous months. Mind you, it is higher than in the previous year, so we are still talking about an increase. The amount of the increase will depend on the check we previously collected, since it is a percentage.
To collect this check, we will need to meet these two requirements:
- Have a Social Security check since May 1997.
- Have a birthday between the 11 and 20 of any month.
Only then will we be among the group of retirees who get their benefit on April 17th. This is the first of the Social Security payments for retirees who have their benefits accepted as of May 1997. The remaining retirees will collect in the next few weeks depending on their birthdays.
Other Social Security payments in April
The 17th day will be for retirees with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month. The last of the payments will be on April 24th. On this last day, in addition to having a check from May 1997, it is also mandatory to have a birthday between the 21st and 31st of any month.
With this last day, April 24th, the Social Security payment calendar ends for this month. After that, we will have to wait until May to be able to get a new benefit for retirement, disability or some other reason.
