Ever since OpenAI unveiled GPT-4, its latest large language model that powers ChatGPT Plus and Microsoft Copilot, the rumour mill has been abuzz with the potential capabilities of GPT-5.
The AI community has been eagerly looking forward to the launch of GPT-5, which is also seen as OpenAI’s most advanced AI model. While both OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman have been throwing around hints about the model, very little is known about the company’s upcoming large language model.
In this article, we attempt to compile all that we know about GPT-5 so far.

When will OpenAI release GPT-5?
Earlier this year during Sam Altman’s discussion with Bill Gates, the OpenAI CEO confirmed that they were already working on GPT-5, but did not share any details about the release.
While OpenAI announced GPT-4 a few months after it launched ChatGPT, the company was reportedly working on the new version for almost two years. If GPT-5 follows a similar timeline, we may see the upcoming large language model sometime in 2025. However, a recent report by Business Insider claims that OpenAI might announce GPT 5 sometime this summer.

How better will GPT-5 be compared to GPT-4?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that GPT-5 will be a big improvement over the current version and have more parameters compared to the current version. The company also says GPT-5 “will be a state-of-the-art language model that makes it feel like you are communicating with a person rather than a machine.” While GPT-4 can currently process both text and image, OpenAI says the most important areas of progress will be around reasoning ability.

Will GPT-5 be free?
Currently, the free version of ChatGPT is powered by GPT-3.5, which is a fairly old model. If you want to use OpenAI’s latest model, you will have to shell out $20 per month. Going by the current trend, it looks like GPT-5 will most likely be locked behind a similar paywall.
