Did you spend a little too much on Black Friday weekend? Or have a long holiday shopping list? You can still get a side hustle ahead of the holidays.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Job applications are still open for many retailers all over the First Coast, so if you’re looking for a second source of income this holiday season, now is the time to apply.
There are more than 1,800 retail positions open, according to Career Source Northeast Florida. Making it the most advertised job occupation among all industries in the region.
Companies like Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Winn-Dixie are some of the top stores that add seasonal jobs. Giving contracted workers employee discounts to their favorite stores.
And if you don’t want to work with customers, working in a warehouse is an option.
Both UPS and Amazon announced plans to add thousands of seasonal workers to keep up with the online shopping orders.
Experts say this might be a great way to get a job in the new year if you are a part of the 3.5% of people unemployed on the First Coast.
“It could be people who have faced hiring challenges this year. It’s been really difficult for job seekers, and it’s an opportunity to get their foot in the door, maybe be recognized as a really valuable employee who might be able to go on full time after that contract role is complete,” explained Brenda Siri, Corporate Connections CEO.
She adds that if you already have a full-time job, when applying to these side hustles, make it clear that you’re specifically looking for a seasonal or short contracted role. Especially if you’re overqualified for the entry-level retail position.
“A lot of people will just get rejected immediately. Somebody may apply for a warehouse position where maybe they’ve been the vice president of logistics for a company, and a recruiter is typically going to say, ‘Oh, no, they’re highly overqualified; we’re not going to consider them,’” Siri said.
If you’re still looking for a job, from now through Dec. 18, CareerSource NEFL hosts “Recruitment Wednesdays” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at its Southside Career Center, where you can meet a handful of employers looking for seasonal workers.
