Two students from the Tennessee College of Applied Technology Henry/Carroll earned top three finishes, including a national championship, at the recent 2024 National Leadership and Skills Conference.
Lollie Brown, a health information management student, became this year’s national champion in College/Postsecondary Pin Design, bringing home the gold medal for that competition, which took place June 24-28 in Atlanta.
Each state and territory has contestants designing a pin representing their state and SkillsUSA. Brown’s design featured Elvis Presley’s Pink Cadillac and Dolly Parton’s signature butterflies.
Hunter Hamilton, a residential building maintenance student, won a bronze medal in commercial roofing. Both he and Brown advanced to the national competition after winning the state competition in April.
The two local TCAT winners were part of the SkillsUSA Tennessee college/post-secondary delegation, which included 132 students representing 26 colleges.
The delegation competed in 83 of the 110 different trade, technical and leadership competitions offered.
By the end of the competition, Tennessee had received 57 medals, including 29 gold, 21 silver and 7 bronze. The state also earned the award of largest college/post-secondary delegation increase as well as the largest college delegation in the nation with more than 14,400 members across the state.
