A new law to give freelance workers protections for pay took effect in Illinois.
The Freelance Worker Protection Act dictates people who hire independent contractors are required to pay those workers based solely on the terms of their contracts, with no deviations. If the contract doesn’t specify when they’ll get paid, the payment has to be made no later than 30 days after the work has been done. The law also sets up a complaint process through the Illinois Department of Labor.
The Freelance Worker Protection Act is meant to resolve any issues between a freelance worker and the person or organization they entered into a contract with. The law isn’t retroactive; it only applies to contracts signed after July 1. For more information, click here.
