Apple has officially entered the AI arms race, debuting a variety of new features for its iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices at its annual World Wide Developers conference on Monday.
A collaborative effort between Apple and OpenAI, the company’s new artificial intelligence technology branded “Apple Intelligence,” will be accessible through new software updates set to roll out later this year, according to the Associated Press.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised the collaboration, stating that their goal is “to make it easier for people to benefit from AI.” The ChatGPT integration will be accessible to all iPhone users at no cost, and existing ChatGPT subscribers will have the option to sync their accounts for additional advanced features, according to the AP.
Apple’s 13-year-old virtual assistant, Siri, is reportedly undergoing a major revamp to become more multifaceted and personable. According to the AP, the updated Siri will have features which allow users to track engagement and be capable of handling hundreds of additional tasks. The full set of AI features will only be compatible with newer Apple devices due to the necessity of advanced processors.
Apple is reportedly implementing improving privacy protections for its AI technology. The company intends to process the majority of AI-driven features within each device rather than utilizing remote data centers. According to the AP, tasks requiring more computing resources will be managed via a “private cloud” to safeguard users’ personal information.
