Freelancing is great for flexibility; being able to choose when I work is a huge draw. But there’s another big perk that I personally value almost as much: qualifying for small business credit cards.
Alright, so that may sound silly, but as a credit card aficionado, I absolutely dig being able to expand my rewards cards options. And one of the first business cards I picked up was the awesome Ink Business Cash® Credit Card.
Here are a few of the reasons I’m such a big fan.
Featured offer: save money while you pay off debt with one of these top-rated balance transfer credit cards
1. Welcome bonus worth up to $750 cash back
Right off the bat, this card has a lucrative welcome bonus. Earn up to $750 bonus cash back: $350 when you spend $3,000 in the first three months, then another $400 when you spend a total of $6,000 in the first 6 months.
This is a reasonable spending requirement for such a high bonus, especially because you ultimately have six months to meet it. (In my case, using my card to pay my quarterly estimated taxes neatly earned that bonus.)
2. 5% back on internet and cellphone service
The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card offers multiple bonus rewards categories of varying utility. You’ll earn:
- 5% cash back at office supply stores
- 5% cash back on internet, cable, and phone services
- 2% cash back at gas stations
- 2% cash back at restaurants
- 1% cash back on purchases
The 5% bonus categories are capped at $25,000 in combined category spend per year, but that’s probably well over what most freelancers will spend on office supplies and internet.
While office supply rewards are nice, it’s the 5% back on internet, cable, and phone services that really caught my own eye — and wallet. My internet bills alone doubled when I started working from home, and I was happy to update my cellphone bill’s autopay the day I activated my Ink Business Cash® Credit Card.
3. 120 days of purchase protection
I’ve only used the office supply bonus rewards category a few times, and it was usually to pick up a new piece of tech or office furniture. It wasn’t just the bonus rewards that made me pay with my Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, however — I also wanted the purchase protection.
Cardholders can get up to 120 days of purchase protection when they use their Ink Business Cash® Credit Card on an eligible purchase. This covers your purchase in the case of damage or theft up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per account. This is a lot of peace of mind for that pricey new laptop or expensive office chair!
4. Business rental car coverage
Sometimes as a freelancer, it’s hard to say where life — and your work — will take you. If your next business trip happens to involve a rental car, consider using your Ink Business Cash® Credit Card to pay for it.
While this isn’t the most lucrative rewards card for travel purchases, you get something nearly as valuable: auto rental collision damage coverage. As long as you’re renting for business purposes, you can waive the rental car agency’s collision coverage and rely on primary coverage from your card.
A few types of vehicles aren’t covered (no luxury car rentals here, sorry folks), so be sure to read the fine print before you rent.
5. No annual fee
By this point, you’re probably realizing exactly how much the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card has to offer. So you’re probably a little shocked to realize that all of this comes with no annual fee. That’s right, it’ll cost you a whopping $0 to keep this card in your wallet.
For me, having no annual fee means I don’t have to worry about how often I’m using my card or if I’m optimizing every perk and feature. If I have a month where the only purchase is my cellphone and internet bills, well, earning 5% on those is more than enough for this card to earn its keep since there’s no annual fee.
A good credit card for any freelancer
No matter what kind of freelance work you do, chances are good you can make use of at least one of this card’s awesome cash back categories. Pair that with the other perks — and lack of an annual fee — and you have a credit card that would be a good fit in any freelancer’s wallet.
