United States retirees and SSDI recipients may soon receive their last Social Security payment in 2024. From December 16 through December 31, there will only be 2 paydays set for retirement or Disability Insurance. However, if you qualify for SSI, there is good news. All Supplemental Security Income recipients will get their money on December 31, 2024, rather than on New Year’s Day.
The next Social Security payment will be due on December 18, 2024. So, if you have not received your monthly payment yet and you were born from the 11th to the 20th of any month, your retirement or SSDI benefit will soon be in your bank account.
Who cannot receive the Social Security check on December 18?
For your information, you cannot receive Social Security on December 18 if you are receiving the Supplemental Security Income payment on December 31. Those retirees and SSDI recipients who started collecting payments before May 1997 do not qualify either.
If you receive the retirement or SSDI payment on December 11, December 18 will not be your payday either. Of course, if you were born from 21-31, your payday cannot be Dec. 18.
In fact, those Social Security recipients who have not collected a monthly payment yet and whose birth date is from 21-31 will get their payments on December 24, a day before the normal payday.
Social Security amounts for SSDI and retirement on Dec. 18 & 24
SSDI payments tend to have lower amounts. For example, an average SSDI check is about $1,542 as of November 2024. Retirees on Social Security can get about $1,927.
So, retirees get about $385 more than SSDI recipients on average. If you were a high earner when you worked for 35 years, you could receive up to $3,822 from SSDI benefits.
Nevertheless, if you filed at 70 and qualify for retirement benefits, your payment could be up to $4,873. These amounts will soon increase after the 2025 COLA increase. Retirees who qualify will receive up to $5,108 in 2025 while SSDI recipients up to $4,018.
How does date of birth affect the Social Security payment schedule?
The Social Security payment schedule is based on the beneficiary’s date of birth:
- If your birthday is between the 1st and the 10th of the month, you will receive your Social Security payments on the second Wednesday of each month.
- If your birthday is between the 11th and the 20th of the month, you will receive your Social Security payments on the third Wednesday of each month.
- If your birthday is between the 21st and the 31st of the month, you will receive your Social Security payments on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
